International students that receive stipends are subject to taxes based on their home country tax treaty. Once the student is awarded a stipend they are enrolled into the tax compliance system (Glacier). This system evaluates the tax consequences for each student

US citizens or Permanent Resident Aliens are not subject to tax withholdings. However, this form of payment is still reported as income. In this scenario NYU will not withhold any taxes from the stipend.

Once you receive an invitation from Glacier- you will need to complete the Glacier profile, to determine if the US has a tax treaty with your country. You will have 15 days to complete Glacier or you will pay 30% tax on your NYU payment. For more information, contact: nyu.glacier@nyu.edu

If you are not eligible for a SS number then you will need an ITN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number), which is issued by the IRS. You can refer to this instruction.

In 24 - 72 hours from when the stipend posts in PeopleSync, a student employee will have PeopleSync access. At that time, a student receiving a stipend will be able to enroll in direct deposit, with them enrolling, same as an employee, and the account clearing in 5 - 10 business days. Students themselves CHOOSE to enroll in direct deposit; if they do not elect direct deposit, a paper check is sent to a location on campus for retrieval. For more information, please watch the instructions for direct deposit enrollment in PeopleSync.
